Nalani's Birthday, Part 2!

Even though we had a great time together celebrating Nalani's birthday as a family, she really wanted a small party with all her "friends."

Well, the problem is that Nalani doesn't talk to any of the other kids at Cari's Mom's Club. They other kids seem to like Lani, and she them, they just don't talk with one other.

But Cari, being Super-Mom, decided to invite over a few of her friends with younger children so Nalani could have a little pool party the day after her birthday...

She told everyone that this was just for fun -- and no presents were expected.

But of course, in typical fashion, a real party broke out...

With Nalani at the head of the table, which she absolutely loved...

It also didn't hurt Nalani's feelings that everyone decided to bring little birthday present anyway!

But with 6 kids, even after a party, there is always something else that we have to do.

We're off to Hawaii in two days so this was going to be the last baseball game for David in three weeks. He'll have one game left the day after we return, but he won't have practiced over that time -- so if he was going to shine it had to be today!

As usual, he started third in the batting order...

And slowly he began to be advanced around the bases, on to second...

Then with a little help from other batters he rounded third...

And found his way home!

Now the problem with taking pictures of a baseball game is that you spend a lot of time staring through the lens at absolutely nothing. When Bretty was playing football, on every single play you could expect him to be running around the field doing something.

Okay, maybe sometimes he was just running in circles, but at least it looked exciting in a photograph.

In baseball, you can compose a nice picture of your son...

But then while he's standing around for batter after batter, you get another picture that looked an awful lot like the last one...

Or another that looked like the one before that...

So after focusing the camera and waiting for that single play that comes to your boy, your arms get tired and you put the camera down -- figuring that you won't miss anything if you take a single pitch off from staring through the lens.

And of course, that had to be exactly the pitch that the opposing batter hits solidly right at your boy.

So in a frantic rush you pull the camera back up and snap whatever you can get.

Which in this case was a picture of David shortly after his great fielding play and throw to first...

Just as the picture above was taken, David watched as the umpire called the batter out at first as a result of his throw.

He did such a great job that he was literally jumping for joy after the out.

And for his terrific game and that play in particular, the coaches gave him a little recognition...

David, today's recipient of the coach's game ball!
